EVALUATION. part 7.

EVALUATION.
Part 7.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

This is a school magazine cover that I created for my preliminary test.

looking back on my preliminary task I can see numerous things I would never peruse whilst creating a magazine cover now. I think through not only experimenting and trying out different magazine techniques, but combined with research from the history of other music magazines, I have picked up on many techniques that have benefited my cover.
This photograph for some reason has come up very pixelated, however originally was very clear. Some of the things I didn't take into account whilst planning this cover was fonts, themes or even photograph positioning. This was the only photograph I had taken, which I now know wasn't wise as having a wide variety to choose from is so much more satisfying knowing my picture is the best one I could get.
My title 'Southfield school for girls' is not bond or big so it does not stand out or capture the audience eye at all, this was something to learn from for my final cover. Not only did the title not stand out but the subtexts and catch lines were not eye grasping either, I again learnt from this making sure in my next cover I would use a bold eye catching font with a colour that stands out drastically. Also I found that layering text over the main image is a bad idea as the page just looks cluttered and messy, so I made sure in my final piece I did not do that.
Although I made a lot of mistakes on this cover there were a few aspects I am proud of and wanted to keep for my final, for example on this cover the bottom logos placed in a white strip looked very professional in my opinion. Unfortunately however this wouldn't be appropriate from my music magazine being a completely different style.

This is my final piece.
I made sure to bare in mind all of my mistakes that I made in my preliminary task. the title is a lot more bold and captures the eye a lot more. I even think having just a single word rather than three words helped keep it short and eye catching. I made sure to have a theme, rolling with black and blue. I chose these colours as I have previously experimented with these colours and I found it was very successful. I made sure my text does not overlap my image to avoid clutter and I also found having my tag lines shorter was a lot more professional and effective.
unlike my first magazine I was able to feature real well known artist names and real life events/news, this was a lot more interesting for me to create and I found it attracted a lot more of an audience.
For this magazine cover I put in a lot more planning time and preparation time, I found that knowing exactly what I wanted to created and how I would do it was a lot more effective and actually saved me time, this was especially useful as this piece was set for a deadline.

what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I captured my photographs on a high tech camera that was provided for me in school.
This was extremely helpful for me as it captured the fine detail and quality a magazine over needs.

I then edited the photographs using the website 'picmonkey' allowing me to edit sizing, colours and many other useful advantages to make my cover all the more attractive

Part 5.
how did you attract/address your audience?

My first thoughts on how to make my magazine cover appeal to my audience was what image I was going to have on it. Baring in mind my recent discovery that subconsciously hip-hop magazines are reaching out to the male eye more, I chose to have a female model. I dressed her in minimal clothing, I did this as research I have carried out shown me that the more revealing and sexualised magazines covers sold more.
I then had to think about what I'm actually including in my magazine, I of course had to address well known hip-hop artists for my magazine to be taken seriously. I used texts such as 'Ana Sum; exclusive' and 'Beyoncé lathers up', to tease the audience and wanting them to buy to magazine to reveal what the catch lines really mean.

Part 4.
Who would be the audience for your media product?

My magazine had all intentions on attracting both male and female genders equally, however I do feel that my final front cover will attract the male audience more than female. Subconsciously I think  hip-hop magazines, not necessarily the genre over all, has gradually become more a appealing to men rather than women. I think this because of the simple fact that the percentage of covers with a very revealing women is a lot higher than the percentage of men (despite being revealed or not) on a cover. I want my magazine to sell to its full potential so have featured a revealing woman on the cover.
I wanted my age range to be as wide as possible in order to be success in sales figures however I found this was very difficult being quite a narrow age ranged genre. I chose my range to be from 15-30, this concerned me due to the fact I had both adults and minors however adjusting the cover to fit the two became no issue at all. I chose 15 as my youngest as that's when personally I experienced myself and peers having a strong interest in hip-hop, in the modern society of today children a lot younger than 15 do listen to hip-hop music, however I believe that children under 15 years of age being exposed to this is wrong. I chose 30 as my oldest as I feel that's the age when people mature and drift away from hip-hop, however having audience members older than this would be a bonus.

My magazine will no doubt have many different classes on completely different levels of income. I feel that the majority of the readers will be working class and due to the wide age range there may be some element of skilled working class people that are in their early thirties. As I have mentioned earlier I would like my magazine to appeal to all kinds of audiences regardless of their socio-economic status.

Part 3.
what kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

After researching and studying many different publishers, the most successful institution for my magazine would be Bauer. I chose Bauer as it was the most wide audience ranging institution.
I found that Bauer publishing are very popular in issuing magazines, and I think my magazine would sell particularly well as the age range is so wide. not only does this media institution have a wide audience range but its particularly upbeat and up to speed, often publishing the latest and the most popular magazines.

This is a list of all the different brands that Bauer publishes.

Part 2.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?

When first planning my music magazine I straight away knew I wanted to reach out to a young and hip audience, I wanted this as being young myself I would be able to connect with my work and enjoy it, so I therefore chose hip-hop as my genre. My audience ranges between bother genders and age range between 15-30 yrs old. This at first worried me as I am reaching to an audience of minors and adults, so I had to keep it appropriate for the minors but yet still satisfying for the 18+. Although this at first was an issue knowing there were boundaries I could only go to without my images or text being inappropriate, I soon learnt ways of keeping it pleasurable for all audience members.

The stereo typical view on hip-hop isn't at all portrayed well in the publics eye, often linked with sex, drugs and violence. Although I have strong disbelief in the way hip-hop is portrayed, and I do aspire to change that, I am aware of what sells and what makes money so I therefore stuck with the typical portrayal of hip-hop.

FINAL.

DRAFT NO.1

Double page spread final.

I was inspired to design my double page spread like this after creating my Miley Cyrus draft.
This was orignally inspired by the offical Cosmo double page spread layout.

Contents page 1

I've kept my contents page very simple and plain, I dont want my viewers to feel too overwelmed or get distracted from my main points on the page. I feel when a contents page has to much going on it can just look too cramped with risk of looking cheap.

This is an example of a contents page that seems too full.
This Vibe contents page is much simpler and basic. Throughout my research I have been inspired by Vibe a lot so again I have aimed to make my contents like this one.
